Dr. Nino Sharikadze, Associate Professor at Ken Walker International University, completed a Short-Term Scientific Mission (STSM) at Aston Medical School, Aston University, in Birmingham, UK, from 31 August to 18 September 2026.
The mission was carried out under the European Cooperation in Science and Technology (COST) programme, with support from COST Action CA24138 — the European Resolution Biology Network (EU-RESOLVE). Her research project explored resolution lipidomics and mitochondrial bioenergetics as early biomarkers of inflammation associated with ischemic stroke.
Under the guidance of her host researcher, Dr. Irundika Dias, Dr. Sharikadze received hands-on training in lipid extraction methods, mass spectrometry analysis of samples and interpretation of the resulting data, as well as assessment of mitochondrial oxygen consumption using Seahorse technology.
During her visit, Dr. Sharikadze also attended an event dedicated to laboratory teaching technologies at the University of Birmingham and explored laboratory teaching practices at UK universities.
All core objectives of the mission were achieved. Samples were successfully analysed using mass spectrometry, and the resulting lipidomic data are currently being processed. The collaboration established with Aston University and the experience gained contribute to strengthening Ken Walker International University’s research capacity.
