How can research findings become a clear, well-structured scientific paper? Professor Gordon Churchward, Professor Emeritus of Microbiology and Immunology at Emory University School of Medicine, explored this topic with students at Ken Walker International University.
The session introduced students to the key stages of preparing a scientific paper – from defining a research question to submitting a manuscript for publication. Professor Churchward explained the purpose of each section: Introduction, Methods, Results, and Discussion. He also shared practical advice on writing titles and abstracts, presenting data, and discussing study limitations.
Gordon Churchward’s central message to students was that a good scientific paper should clearly explain what the authors investigated, how they conducted the study, and what they found. Conclusions should always be supported by the data.
Particular attention was given to clear writing and academic integrity, including proper referencing, authorship criteria, and honest reporting of research findings. The discussion also addressed transparency in the use of artificial intelligence and authors’ responsibility for the accuracy of their work.
The session gave students practical guidance for beginning their scientific writing – identifying their main research message, selecting an appropriate journal, and planning the manuscript.
